Message from University of Barcelona
There will always be critics of rankings but there are also supporters. This welcome message from the Rector of the University of Barcelona, sent in writing yesterday, lifted our Monday morning.
So, if you appreciate what we do, please follow the example and let us know.
How did we compile the WUR by Subject – Computer Science?
With this week’s release of the 2013 QS World University Rankings by Subject, we produced a series of videos, which explain in a somewhat unusual manner, the methodology behind compiling our Subject Rankings.
The first of the series presents the Top 10 Universities in Computer Science and gives a sneak peek of how we ‘really’ come up with our results!
An Erasmus Experience…
The Erasmus programme, in my opinion, is one of the great success stories of the European Union for the undisputed benefits it provides to the society investing in Europe’s youth, investing in the future.
Personally if I hadn’t received an Erasmus Placement grant, now I couldn’t be in London working as an intern for one of the most important enterprise in the educational field like QS, which shares with the Erasmus programme the same mission of helping individuals fulfill their potential through fostering international mobility, educational achievement and career development. I am really grateful for this awesome opportunity that gives me the chance to live in London, a melting pot of different cultures and traditions, and also work in a multicultural environment with colleagues from all over the world.
Methodological refinements reveal hidden gems – QS World University Rankings by Subject
Today sees the release of the 2013 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
This year the work has been extended to address 30 subjects with the addition of Agriculture & Forestry. Developments don’t stop there though, stronger survey responses, refined analysis and the introduction of a score based on h-index have led to the most fascinating set of results yet.
In compiling the subject rankings perhaps the biggest challenge is overcoming what might be termed the “Princeton Law School” effect. Where highly reputed universities in the round are found to be strong in disciplines which they are not, or in some cases do not cover at all.

Diverse subject rankings show the strength of global competition
This year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject cover a record 29 disciplines, and the headline figure tells a familiar story.
MIT and Harvard underline their place at the forefront of global academia in a range of fields, topping the tables in 11 disciplines apiece, with fellow US institution Stanford University taking 3 top spots.
The remaining number-one positions are occupied by the UK’s leading universities, Oxford (top in geography, history and philosophy) and Cambridge (English language and literature).
However, while the leading institutions from the US and UK underline their consistency across the spectrum of academic endeavor, these rankings are notable above all, for the number of world-class departments they reveal at institutions less accustomed to the upper echelons of global rankings.
QS Subject Rankings 2012: top universities for natural sciences
The release of the QS World University by Subject revealed some interesting trends. The big picture for natural sciences is much the same as in most subject areas: overall US domination, interspersed with fairly stable performance from universities in other well-established higher education destinations, and – in general – the most exciting upwards movement coming from emerging Asian universities.

QS World University Rankings by Subject 2012 Release
A second round of global comparisons of universities and specialist institutions in 29 subjects will begin to be published on Friday, 29th of June.
The new QS World University Rankings by Subject will be released in four tranches, beginning with the social sciences. They will feature improvements to the methodology introduced last year in the first ever international rankings of individual subjects, as well as an extension into new academic areas. Universities will continue to be ranked by academic reputation, employer reputation and research citations, with weightings tailored to each subject.
Last year’s exercise highlighted areas of excellence in universities that may not compete at the top level across all subjects, as well as confirming the status of the leaders in the overall QS World University Rankings.
The first 26 subject rankings attracted huge interest in 2011. Although dominated by Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the results allowed more than 550 universities to demonstrate their strength in particular fields. Among the new subjects to be ranked will be Education and Communication and Media Studies, both of which attract large numbers of international students.
